The name filé comes from the French name “filet”, which means network. In fact, it is an embroidery on a network of threads. It is created with floral themes on top of a mesh that resembles the fishing net of the artisan’s husbands who live on the coastal state of Alagoas. It is there where women weave for their own survival using coloured threads and a lot of patience.

After making the nets, they stretch them on a wooden loom to start embroidering with different stitch sequences and colours, which allow for different variations. Thus, each artisan can innovate in her style and create pieces with authentic design.
