If you have come this far, it is probably because you have already browsed our site a bit and found out that Brazilian bossa translates into fashion, through our pieces. Our greatest desire is that all this Brazilianness is circulated around the world and that all women can know, recognize, and enjoy this Brazilian “touch” in fashion with elegance and sophistication.

For this to happen, we think it is important to tell stories about some of the main intangible riches that Brazil produces, only this way can we understand how rich and diverse Brazilian fashion is and why we have such a great social and environmental responsibility behind each one of our pieces.

We have already told you a little about Golden Grass here and today we want you to know a little bit more about the much-loved Filet Lace.

The name Filet Lace comes from the French “filet”, which means “net”. Even in colonial Brazil, the French, when arriving to the country, brought with them a very peculiar way of embroidery. It was being passed on little by little, from generation to generation, to what is now considered an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Alagoas.

With the arrival of the French, the technique was established in the coastal communities of Alagoas. Until today, the main people responsible for crafting Filet Lace are artisans, many of them fishermen’s wives, who use the lace production as their main means of livelihood while their husbands do not return from the fishing season.

Filet Lace is also known worldwide as Embroidery Filet, and it has in fact been cataloged internationally under this name. Embroidery is “all work carried out by means of a needle on any type of pre-existing support”. It is usually made on a fabric, while the Filet Lace is made on a surface of woven threads. Thus, it is produced through two steps. The first is to make a net with cotton threads with a small spacing between them. The second step consists of filling this network with various combinations of points.

The variety of stitches, the complexity of the execution of these stitches between them and the vibrant and vivid colors give Alagoas Filet Lace incredibly unique characteristics when compared to laces in other places produced using the same technique.

We are immensely proud to say that we are part of this network that supports local production, slow fashion, and handmade pieces. And even more proud of being able to spread all this Brazilianness around the world. Clicking here you can check all our pieces in Filet Lace.
